| "What, what a sucky job," Sonya griped, looking inside the dark hole in the sand. "I mean worms, why did it have to be killer worms? Do we really have to go in there?"
"I'm afraid so," Hachi said, kneeling down beside the hole as well. "We have to find out where those worms are going, so the best way to do that is follow their tunnels back to wherever they live."
Sonya let out a deep sigh. "Right... well, when they can't find our bodies, I'm blaming you."
Because Sonya was such a new acquisition to Suna, the village had found it best to put her in the supervision of a superior shinobi, the Special Jounin Hachi. He would be running any missions with her that she took. After all, both her skill and her village loyalty were still in question to her new home. She'd only been there a few days, though had at least impressed people at the academy when she showed them what she already knew. They let her have her former rank of chuunin, though she still hadn't told them where she came from before. She could never tell anyone, for fear of them relaying the information to Iwa, who would undoubtedly come to find her.
"So, still not going to say where you're from, huh?" Hachi said, dropping down inside the underground tunnel behind her. "I mean, you come out of no where saying you're looking for a new home, and then you blow away the teachers at the academy with the stuff you already know and get set up as a chuunin right away. I'd call that a bit mysterious."
"Well, it's going to stay a mystery," Sonya informed, heading down the long, wide tunnel. These sand worms must be huge... She really hoped they didn't run into one on the way to wherever they were going.
Hachi merely shrugged. "If you say so."
And so they continued on in silence, keeping their eyes and ears peeled. As they made their way through the tunnel, they eventually came to another series of even more interconnecting tunnels. It was like a vast underground roadway. It was a good thing they were down here to deal with the problem then. Who knew what would happen to the desert if his problem went unchecked?
"It's really spooky down here..." Sonya muttered, looking around at all the new tunnel options. Where would they search next? Then, she heard something. It sounded kind of like a low rumbling, and the ground was starting to shake "What is that?"
"Quick over here!" Hachi said, ducking around the corner of one of the tunnels. Just as he did, a large monstrous creature went slithering by in the other direction, one of the sand worms. "Come on, let's follow it!"
"Follow it?!" Sonya cried out, running after him. "Teeth, Hachi! That worm had teeth! And you want to follow it?!"
But she had no say so in the matter, and could only sprint after Hachi as fast as they could go, to wherever the worm was heading. Finally, after what seemed liked forever, they came to the end of the tunnel. What they found was a large cavern some several stories tall, going far down into the ground below them. They also found sand worms. Lots of sand worms... and they were all looking right at them now.
"Uh...Hachi...plan?" she said, backing up slowly as the sand worms started slithering their way.
"Keep them busy, I have to set the bomb."
Right, the bomb. Some super fire bomb that would scorch all the worms to hell. But... wait a minute...
"Keep them busy?!" Sonya shrieked, turning and running in the other direction. All the worms started going straight towards her. "Oh sure, no problem!"
She shot off a few giant fireballs, which managed to slow a few of them down, but there were just too many of them. Trying to juke them out, she started sprinting straight up the side of the wall to where they couldn't follow her...or at least she thought they couldn't. They just decided to dig straight through the wall and go upwards after her, causing her to plummet to the ground when they burst through the cavern wall above her. She righted herself just in time to land on her feet and gave off a dragon fire technique, sending a massive stream of fire straight at them. While it apparently put a stop to the ones in front, the ones in back just got pissed off and kept coming after her.
"Hachiiiii!" she screamed, turning and running again.
"Hold on!" he said, suddenly appearing and grabbing her. Before she knew it, they were floating on a chunk of earth shooting straight at the ceiling of the cavern. He made a hand sign and instantly they head clear passage into the world above, flying up like a rocket into the desert just as a massive pillar of fire bust through the ground behind them, no doubt blazing throughout the entire tunnel system.
When they finally landed back on the ground, Sonya rubbed her head and slowly stood back up again. "Fucking worms..."
