| “Alright, everything is in place,” Hachi said, watching through the binoculars again. The group of marauders and their shinobi friends were still marching along the border. They were only a few miles from a fairly active checkpoint just over the River Country line. Their plan was to stop them before they got that close and attacked anymore travelers. “They're heading straight for the trap.”
Hachi had gone ahead of their patch and set up a series of exploding barriers that would detonate when the marauders walked through them. Hopefully, the traps would take out most, if not all, of their enemies, making this a fairly quick and easy mission. They weren't certain on the ranks of the shinobi with them, so they would prefer to not have to engage them directly. They were just one special jounin and one chuunin, after all.
“So what do you want me to do?” Sonya asked. She watched the marauders carefully; they were heading straight for the exploding barriers.
“Hopefully nothing,” Hachi said quietly. “If all goes well, this will be over before it starts.”
“And if it doesn't?”
Hachi paused. “Then I want you to use your genjutsu to get the jump on them while I lead with a heavy attack.”
Sonya frowned a little, glancing over at Hachi. “But they've been using genjutsu on their victims... what if they're more skilled with it than I am?”
“Relax, you're an Uchiha, aren't you?” he said, giving her a smile. “Those eyes of yours are made for genjutsu. You're a a natural.”
Sonya looked down, not so sure about Hachi's praises. Still, it made her smile. “Thanks...” she said, turning her attention back to the horizon. Any moment now, they would have their answer on what they would have to do next... she just hoped there was an explosion.
Of course, the explosion never came. At least, not to the effect they were hoping for. The group did wander into the seal barriers, and they did trigger, engulfing the marauders in a massive explosion... at least, that's what it looked like. When the dust settled, however, there was nothing. No remains. No bodies. Just empty sand.
“W-what? Where are...” Sonya started, only to be caught short as she suddenly felt a presence behind them. Quickly, she flipped forward over the edge of the sand dune; Hachi was already well ahead of her. Seconds later, the ground where they had been moments before exploded. Had they still been there, they would have been blown to pieces.
“Shit!” Hachi shouted, sliding across the sand and helping her back to her feet. “Sonya, get up!”
Sonya didn't need another invitation, she was back on her feet in seconds. “How did they get away?!”
She was answered by an amused laugh. The three shinobi that were with the marauders were now standing atop the sand dune in front of them. They all carried a certain air of power about them. She was almost certain that they were stronger than herself and Hachi, and there were three of them. Now, though, she could see what the problem was.
“Shit, genjutsu,” she muttered, backing up a little. How didn't she see that before? They were more skilled than her, she knew it, and now they were going to die because of her incompetency.
One of the enemy shinobi stepped forward and shook his head. “Trying to get the jump on us? How... incredibly unfortunate for you.”
Almost instantly, the world around them started to melt and twist itself, as if someone had just gone crazy with the distort tool in photoshop. The sky opened up and started to bleed, which didn't even make sense, and yet it terrified her all at the same time.
“Shit shit shit!” Sonya screamed, starting to panic.
“Sonya, calm down!” Hachi said, making hand seals. “Do what you do best! Follow my lead!” With that, he pressed his hands to the ground and caused massive jagged spikes of stone to shoot up from the ground at the other shinobi, but they were already gone. “You have those eyes for a reason don't you? Use them!”
Sonya swallowed, trying to calm down, but the whole world around them was so frightening right now, she had trouble. But if she didn't do something fast, they were done for. She just needed...something... she needed to find one of them... where were they?
And then she saw them, the three shinobi moving in amidst the melted world. Under normal circumstances, she wouldn't have been able to do anything to stop the attack, but she didn't need to do much with her Sharingan. She concentrated, looking the shinobi in the eyes... and then instantly the world went back to normal.
The enemy stopped in their tracks, suddenly the ones who were panicking. “What the hell? How is... this isn't possible!” one of them yelled. No doubt they were baffled at how they had gone from the ones in charge to the ones suffering from their own genjutsu.
Sonya fell to her knees, her head pounding with a sudden headache. Hachi took it over from their, performing another earth jutsu that send the three shinobi flying helter skelter with broken, twisted bodies. That...really looked like it hurt.
“We...did it?” Sonya said, breathing in deeply. “Holy crap...”
“I told you,” Hachi said, going to check on the bodies. “You did good Sonya... really.” He paused for a moment. “Hmm... this one's still a live, barely. Let's get him back to Suna, maybe we can get some information out of him."
